Focus

In power distribution systems, many a time, single-phase faults occur with other two phases remaining normal. To maintain power supply to critical loads, automatic phase change over will be quite useful. In the paper, "Design and Implementation of Auto-Phase Selector from Three-Phase Supply", by Veena Bhat, an electronic automatic phase selection circuit is presented.

A set of relays are interconnected in such a way that one of the relay feedings to the load remains energized always. When phase failure occurs, the electronic circuit ensures that a relay that delivers power to the essential loads is switched. In the paper, "Microcontroller-Based Detector and Monitoring System of Overspeeding Vehicles for Traffic Management Unit: A Prototype", by Sahawi S Malik, a microcontroller-based system has been developed for traffic control using hand-held guns. GPS with GSM technologies provide real-time information to the controller. The developed system has been extensively tested in the field.

Influence of SVC Supplementary Controls on the Transient Performance of Power System
P V Balasubrahmanyam

Static Var compensators (SVC) are located along the line to maintain constant voltage profile at different loading conditions, increase power transfer capability and maintain stability of the system. Power system modeling is an important task while analyzing the performance of long distance Static Var Compensated transmission system. The paper focuses on selection of suitable supplementary signal to SVC, while considering detailed machine model.

Design and Implementation of Auto-Phase Selector from Three-Phase Supply
Veena Bhat

The power interruption in distribution system is about 70% for single-phase faults, while other two phases are in normal condition. In any commercial power supply system, if three phases are available, then automatic phase selection can be done in critical loads in the event of power failure in any phase. There is no need for backup power supply, and the phase is changed automatically within a few seconds. The aim of this paper is to develop an automatic phase changing switch for 220 V-240 V alternating current. The designs available are single-phase change over switches, two-phase automatic transfer switch and three-phase automatic change over switch which are manually operated. But the paper presents automatic-phase selection using electronic circuit, which is designed only for three-phase AC input power to single-phase AC output applications.

Microcontroller-Based Detector and Monitoring System for Overspeeding Vehicles for Traffic Management Unit: A Prototype
Sahawi S Malik

The study aims to develop a monitoring system for overspeeding vehicles, as a number of road accidents are caused due to overspeeding. The circular research method diagram has sequential processes such as conducting and analyzing requirements. This prototype model system has two parts: hardware and software integration, including the construction, test and evaluation system. The study provides learning theories, hardware skills of microcontroller, MySQL server, GPS and GSM, and software skills integration such VB.Net, Windows 7, Google map application and SMS notification. The prototype model will be helpful in traffic management and in reducing the number of accidents.
