With the constantly growing competition, changing business waves and frequent business disruptions, building and managing HPTs is not an option anymore. HPTs offer numerous strategic advantages to organizations compared to their traditional counterparts. The HPTs assure up to 21% increase in profitability as against the conventional teams. Lesser absenteeism (up to 41%), lesser employee turnover (up to 59%), and enhanced employee wellness (up to 66%) are some of the more immediate advantages that HPTs offer to organizations.

While these are some of the benefits that HPTs offer, not every team can become a HPT just by a title. The members come with several special qualities, which make the whole team a HPT. HPTs find comfort in diversity. They operate across the functions, breaking the organizational silos. The members of HPTs are intrinsically motivated, self-driven and passionate about the team's task. They are emotionally intelligent, high on conscientiousness, highly adaptable and generally agreeable to the fellow members. While these are some of the characteristics, this issue of Effective Executive presents a detailed perspective on the HPTs, in the form of handpicked papers from subject experts. In the first paper, "The Evolution of High-Performing Teams", Bob Murray analyzes HPTs and the inherent human tendencies. The paper suggests that HPTs are rare because our working practices-like our society-are too far from our evolutionary design specs. It concludes that for an organization to be productive, innovative, adaptive and attractive, it must be composed of HPTs.

The second paper, "The Challenge of Leading High-Performing Teams" by Cynthia Lariviere and Stephanie Jones, suggests that creating HPTs can propel leaders to new career opportunities and set the tone for their future success and promotions. However, they caution that the path to achieving this level of success must be grounded in self-reflection, self-awareness, and individual personal development, prior to focusing on the skills and competencies of the team members. The paper offers numerous high-value insights into the functioning of HPTs.

The third paper, "Leadership, Purpose and Priorities for Excellence and Innovation" by Colin Coulson-Thomas, explores the role of a corporate board of directors in relation to excellence and innovation, and in confronting shared challenges and existential threats. It suggests issues and questions to consider in relation to board leadership, its exercise, focus and performance.

The fourth paper, "Simultaneous Systems of Disadvantage: Women as Technical Managers in Mining" by Lindsey Miyen and Kurt April, offers insights into the underresearched personal and lived experiences of women in management in the mining industry in South Africa, allowing them to have a voice and to provide inputs on reforms that support their increased integration.

The last paper, "Critical Thinking and Its Vulnerabilities" by Michael Walton, suggests that 'critical thinking' is a more perplexing notion than it may appear to be, and explores the concept in detail. It highlights the significance of organizational bias and the mindsets of executives in shaping how critical thinking will come to be defined and construed.

The Evolution of High-Performing Teams

Organizations throughout the world are trying to find ways to use their employees more creatively and profitably. Many are structuring themselves around the concept of High-Performing Teams (HPTs). However, fewer than 5% of teams are truly high performing. This paper looks at the concept of HPTs from a scientific and evolutionary perspective and draws practical lessons from that knowledge regarding HPT formation and leadership. The paper shows that given the right context and management, HPTs form naturally because the drive to work in small mutually supportive groups is built into our DNA.

Leadership, Purpose and Priorities for Excellence and Innovation

This paper explores the role of a corporate board of directors in relation to excellence and innovation, and in confronting shared challenges and existential threats. It suggests issues and questions to consider in relation to board leadership, its exercise, focus and performance. Critical thinking, diversity and digital technologies can be enablers of innovation, which may be desirable if it addresses existential threats, supports required transition and transformation journeys, and delivers positive externalities. Boards are encouraged to reflect on the purpose of innovation and the focus of excellence, their application and their limits. Opportunities to create sustainable communities, cities and societies and less stressful and resource-intensive and simpler, healthier and more fulfilling lifestyles are legion. Whether or not an individual board and company is excellent and/or innovative may be less important for future survival than whether a community or society is, and whether individually and collectively boards have the will and drive to question, think and act in pursuit of responsible, inclusive and sustainable activities, lifestyles and outcomes for humanity and the natural world.

Simultaneous Systems of Disadvantage: Women as Technical Managers in Mining

This paper aims to gain insight into the underresearched personal and lived experiences of women in management in the mining industry in South Africa, allowing them to have a voice, and to provide inputs on reforms that support their increased integration. The research questions aim to explore the various challenges faced by, and demands placed on, women executives. Using a phenomenological approach, one-on-one interviews with a diverse group of women in management positions were conducted and analyzed. Specific focus was on the term 'women in mining', and the allocated identities thereof. The differences and commonalities of the intersectional experiences of the participants pertaining to working with both men and women, as well as the experiences of both the imposter syndrome and the glass ceiling were also explored. The study found that the challenges women faced were predominantly personal and environmental, as well as divergent at different organizational levels. The findings of this study have implications for employers as to how to recruit, develop and retain women in the mining industry, as well as for practitioners as how to tailor bespoke reforms for their integration.
