Artificial intelligence (AI) is an integral part of our everyday lives and plays a crucial role in our wellbeing, culture, society, and industry. Some types of AI are known to exhibit emotions, but they are not very common in present-day AI. Some researchers suggest that by endowing AI systems with emotions, emotional experiences could be created in them that help create empathy and a feeling of connectedness with users in applications like mental health, therapy, education, museums, and related experiences. The demand for AI systems, especially those that are embodied or affective and evoke attachment from people, encompasses the need for ethical and moral agency. These systems should be capable of independently evaluating and making socially and legally responsible ethical judgments and decisions. This will contribute to the development of more empathetic, caring, compassionate, therapeutic, healing, and ethical machines.
Just like mental health practitioners, artificial intelligence (AI) also possesses therapeutic potential for mental health issues, for example, depression, anxiety, ADHD, relaxation, mindfulness, and can even help counter the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health. AI-driven mental health therapy and related applications help users improve their mood, cognitive function, quality of life and overall self-improvement, alleviate loneliness, and even develop self-awareness, or spiritual awakening (Nasir et al., 2023). For most successful and relevant applications, AI must skillfully recognize and accurately model human emotions. Its primary function is to improve interactions and facilitate natural, seamless communication among various parties and applications. The current understanding emphasizes the importance of using machine learning-based analysis and related artificial emotional intelligence (EI) to develop emotional and mental health-enhancing AI.
