Career Optimism and Career Adaptability as Predictors of Career Engagement
Abstract

The dynamic nature of careers in the 21st century provides ample scope for conducting research in career psychology. Applying Career Construction Theory, this study examines the role of career optimism and adaptability as predictors of career engagement. Using a cross-sectional design, 516 final-year MBA graduates studying in private universities in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, were assessed on the study variables. Pearson’s correlation coefficients indicated positive relationship among career optimism, career adaptability, and career engagement. Based on regression analysis, career adaptability and career optimism emerged as predictors of career engagement; career optimism predicted career adaptability. Significant gender differences were found, wherein male students scored higher than female students on both the constructs, i.e., career optimism and career engagement. Overall, the study would be of help to management students in preparing for their future careers and to career counselors in guiding students in their career journeys
