In today’s organizations, there are two ways for leaders to get things done with both internal and external stakeholders—through a hierarchy or through a network. While it may seem that hierarchy has more power to get things going, often it is one’s network that gives one leverage over a larger part of the organization. The higher one moves in an organization, the lesser control they have over all its aspects; but with a strong network, one can have an eye on almost every aspect of the organization. This paper explores how one can increase one’s network, use one’s influence, and collaborate with others to create a winning culture.
Being a networked organization versus being a hierarchical organization are two different approaches to a business. Similarly, every individual can also choose to focus on either their power from their hierarchical position or their influence (Figure 1) through their network.
