Soft Skills for Successful HR Interviews: An Assessment of Interview Questions and Answers
Abstract

A job interview is a two-way affair, where the skill set of the candidate is assessed by the company and the image of the company by the candidate. The success of an interview is not just based on a candidate’s academic credentials but also on behavioral aspects, including attitude, body language and paralinguistic features. This part of the interview is generally called Human Resources (HR) interview. The success of job aspirants at HR interview is based on skills agility. Skills agility is nothing but harnessing the right skills at the right time for the right work. To grasp skills agility, a thorough understanding of soft skills is very essential. Soft skills are innate skills that reflect behavioral patterns. A few important soft skills include communication skills, team skills, adaptability and cross-cultural skills. In contrast to hard skills like computer skills or math, soft skills require personal analysis with keen involvement. This paper is an analytical study of soft skills for HR interviews. The major soft skills discussed in the paper are adaptability, interpersonal skills, cross-cultural skills, and growth mindset to be displayed by the candidate during the interview.

Introduction

Generally, any Human Resource (HR) interview assesses and determines the suitability of a candidate for a job. Each question is crafted to seek the candidate’s personal as well as professional skills. HR interview questions focus on the candidate’s past experiences, education, and soft skills. It is difficult to define soft skills, however, it is important to understand how these skills play a pivotal role in interviews (Gopi Krishna et al., 2019).
