The study emphasizes the importance of integrating flexible language learning practices to provide unique linguistic environments in schools in rural and semi-urban areas. Collecting data from selected schools in rural and semi-urban areas of Andhra Pradesh, this study is anchored in the exploration of translanguaging strategies employed by teachers in English classrooms. The findings underscore the role that translanguaging can play in enhancing the students’ communication skills in English within the sociolinguistic context of rural and semiurban communities in Andhra Pradesh. The study also recommends integrating both direct methods of teaching English and translingual practices for a better learning outcome. The paper seeks to contribute to the improvement of language learning experiences through a more adaptive and inclusive classroom environment tailored to the specific needs of the region.
Translanguaging is the use of different languages and can be a powerful tool for learning. It is defined as using all language resources to communicate in a better manner. Over the years, the use of the learner’s mother tongue as a resource has been widespread in English classrooms, especially in multilingual countries like India.
