This paper explores the pedagogical implications of teaching The Rime of the Ancient Mariner in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings, focusing on its lexico-syntactic complexity and associated challenges and opportunities. It investigates how the poem’s intricate language features contribute to its significance in EFL instruction, specifically addressing the challenges EFL learners encounter when navigating archaic vocabulary. The study recommends teaching strategies that involve historical language exploration to connect archaic terms to the narrative’s temporal setting. Additionally, it assesses the potential of the poem’s intricate sentence structures to enhance EFL learners’ syntactic awareness, proposing effective teaching strategies for addressing these complexities. The study examines figurative language for its challenges to EFL learners and suggests methods for instructors to facilitate a comprehensive understanding, and fostering critical thinking skills. The paper also considers the role of vivid imagery and descriptive language in engaging EFL learners’ senses and imagination, investigating the implications of cultural and historical references for EFL instruction. The narrative shifts and mood transitions within the poem are scrutinized for their impact on EFL learners, with the paper concluding by providing teaching approaches for helping students adapt to changing perspectives and discuss mood transitions effectively. This study offers valuable insights into the nuanced task of teaching a complex literary work in EFL contexts.
