Relevant Soft Skills for Students in Their Transition to Corporate World
Abstract

Knowledge of foreign cultures in business provides a significant advantage in terms of effective communication with international clients, opening up new opportunities and global competitiveness. It is, therefore, important to expand the scope of knowledge if one wants to carve out a niche for oneself in this ever-evolving market scenario. Multinational companies want employees who are not only competent in English but also adept in various managerial skills and etiquette. This paper expounds the relevance of various management skills, apart from the basic language skills and corporate etiquette, that can help engineering students find and sustain a job after graduation.

Introduction

To the question why language was invented, the unequivocal answer would be that language was invented “to communicate”. However, it was forthrightly rejected by teacher John Keating in the 1989 movie The Dead Poets’ Society; his answer was: “to woo women”. He was right in his observation. In an era of continual global expansion of the corporate world, it is not only necessary to meet the ‘communicative competence’ but also imperative to apply emotional quotient (EQ) to meet the needs of the burgeoning society. Studying of English is not constricted to only reading of canonical books to enrich language skills. Engineering colleges should take a leaf out of the corporate giants and revamp the English curriculum.
