Humor for Leadership: No Laughing Matter
Abstract

While traits such as strategic vision, business acumen, determination, humility, credibility, empathy, resilience, and energy are essential for a successful leader, humor is also emerging as a desirable leadership trait. Having a great sense of humor is certainly a part of effective leadership, which helps foster good relationships and accomplish tasks in a more engaging manner. The paper discusses how humour improves leadership by diminishing hierarchical distinctions and fostering creativity, teamwork, engagement, wellbeing, stress reduction, and productivity, besides alleviating boredom and stress.

Introduction

The above quote by Dwight D Eisenhower sums it all up. A great sense of humor is indeed a part of the art of leadership, which aids in getting along with people and getting things done, albeit in a more engaging way. When discussing the essential qualities of a successful leader, the typical characteristics that come to one’s mind are strategic vision, business acumen, determination, humility, credibility, empathy, resilience, and energy. Although it is unlikely to be on this shortlist of abilities, humor is becoming increasingly crucial in the workplace. For leaders, a sense of humor reduces hierarchical distinctions and defuses tensions, allowing everyone to enjoy their work more. In addition to promoting creativity and teamwork, laughter also increases engagement and wellbeing, reduces stress and boredom, and improves analytical accuracy and productivity.
