A Bibliometric Analysis of Research on Cryptocurrency Trends
Abstract

This study analyzes the current state of cryptocurrency research thoroughly and lays the groundwork for future investigation. It primarily examines the time frame from 2016 to January 2024 and uses the biblioshiny R-Studio software to analyze a dataset consisting of 445 papers obtained from the Web of Science (WOS). It uses bibliometric approaches to determine the dominant themes, authors, collaborative networks, and contributions at the country level in cryptocurrency studies. The analysis further uncovers prevailing topics, cooperative trends, worldwide contributions to cryptocurrency research, and emerging areas of interest. The findings illuminate the interdisciplinary nature of cryptocurrency studies, offering a thorough summary of the current research and future research directions.

Introduction

Cryptocurrency is a significant and quickly expanding industry that includes digital currencies, blockchain technology and decentralized financial systems (Glaser et al., 2014). Over the years, multiple studies have been carried out to investigate the various facets of cryptocurrencies, encompassing their financial characteristics, macroeconomic consequences, transaction analysis, and evolving patterns in the domain (Conrad et al., 2018; Corbet et al., 2018; Jiang et al., 2021a; and Lahiani and Jlassi, 2021).
