Dynamics of Freight Transport Decarbonization in India: An Exploratory Pilot Stud
Abstract

The logistics sector in India has witnessed exponential growth in the last few decades. Consequently, it accounts for a significant portion of energy demand and is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Given the grave situation and India’s pledge to achieve its net-zero GHG emissions target by 2070 as per the Paris Agreement, all stakeholders need to make substantial efforts to decarbonize the logistics sector. From an academic perspective, the literature on the decarbonization of the Indian logistics sector is nascent and limited, and focuses on narrow areas. Hence, the objectives of this research are to identify the factors that impact the decarbonization efforts of Indian companies and to provide a road map to address the challenges faced by the Indian logistics sector in decarbonizing freight transportation. A conceptual framework outlining the external and internal factors that impact the decarbonization of the Indian logistics sector was developed and empirically tested. Preliminary results indicate that both internal and external factors, identified in the conceptual framework, have a considerable impact on Indian companies’ readiness to decarbonize their logistics operations. A road map is proposed for Indian logistics companies to directly fuel their decarbonization strategy, with a strategic push from policymakers.

Introduction

Global commitment to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions—the most common and prevalent greenhouse gas (GHG)—has led to a call for decarbonization of the freight transport sector and the creation of climate-friendly freight transport systems. To achieve sustainable logistics or eco-friendly logistics, industry practices of integrating environment
