Bibliometric Analysis of Corporate Governance and Leadership: Trends, Themes, and Future Directions
Abstract

The study examines the relationship between corporate governance and leadership, focusing on their impact on organizational performance, strategic decision-making, and governance structures. Using a bibliometric review, the study analyzes 146 academic publications (2005-2025) from Scopus, selected based on journal prominence, subject relevance, and scholarly impact. It explores publication trends, citation patterns, keyword analysis, thematic mapping, and international collaboration, providing a comprehensive perspective on the evolution of this field. The findings reveal a steady rise in research output, particularly since 2018, with an annual growth rate of 7.18%. The US leads in research output, with strong international collaboration from Italy, Hong Kong, and China, while India and South Africa focus on domestic research. The study highlights leadership’s critical role in strengthening corporate governance through ethical practices, transparency, and accountability. Leadership influences governance structures, stakeholder trust, board effectiveness, and corporate sustainability. By examining leading authors, institutions, and collaborative networks, this study enhances the understanding of governance trends and leadership dynamics, reinforcing their growing academic and practical significance. It also paves the way for future studies on leadership-driven governance models and regulatory compliance frameworks.

Introduction

Leadership plays an important role in corporate governance by setting the mission, vision, and plans that guide businesses toward better governance and long-term success (Machold et al., 2011).
