Assessing the Seismic Performance of a High-Rise Building Using Response Spectrum Analysis
Abstract

The paper presents a linear dynamic analysis of a standard high-rise structure (G+15 stories) using Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) to evaluate seismic performance. RSA is a widely adopted technique that helps assess the structural behavior under earthquake-induced forces, particularly for regular structures. The primary objective is to identify and analyze the most vulnerable parts of a building that require focused design attention to effectively resist and dissipate seismic energy. The analysis emphasizes how critical it is to understand the dynamic response of structures during seismic events. By applying seismic loads using RSA, engineers can estimate maximum displacement, inter-story drift, and overall story displacements, which are key indicators of structural performance during an earthquake. A series of chronological RSA simulations were conducted on a regular high-rise structure. The entire modeling and analysis process was carried out using ETABS, a robust finite element method (FEM)-based software, widely used for structural analysis and design. The study focused on structures located in Seismic Zones IV and V, using relevant data and parameters specified in IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016 for seismic analysis.

Introduction

Today, advanced technologies and tools exist to construct super-tall towers. However, India has yet to fully adopt the level of expertise already established in other parts of the world.
