The paper discusses the role of culturally competent leadership in addressing the issue of burnout among expatriate nurses in Kuwait’s government hospitals. Based on a series of interviews with 21 expatriate nurses, the study shows that burnout is not the only consequence of workloads, but rather greatly depends on cultural adaptation stressors, including language barriers, exclusion, and the absence of institutional support. To explain the crossover of emotional exhaustion and cultural disconnection, the concept of Combined Burnout is introduced. The findings highlight that leadership must adopt supportive, inclusive, empathetic, and culturally-responsive practices. The paper concludes with some realistic recommendations regarding leadership, including the formal orientation of culture, continued language support, supervision that leans towards emotional intelligence, and co-creating retention strategies.
