Exploring the Socioeconomic Mobility of Women Entrepreneurs Under PMMY in Tamil Nadu
Abstract

The paper examines the impact of Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) on the socioeconomic mobility of women entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu. PMMY, a government-led initiative, aims to improve access to microfinance, which is crucial for women facing barriers to business financing and growth. The study’s primary objective is to assess the extent to which PMMY has supported women in achieving economic independence, expanding their enterprises, and improving their overall social standing. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining survey data to quantify changes in income, savings, and investment behaviors with qualitative interviews capturing personal experiences, professional growth, and challenges encountered in using PMMY funds. The analysis reveals that PMMY funding has had a positive impact on women’s financial security, enabling business expansion and fostering greater financial independence. Women report enhanced confidence, improved skills, and stronger entrepreneurial autonomy as direct outcomes of PMMY support. However, challenges remain, such as limited loan amounts, procedural delays, and cultural barriers that restrict some women from maximizing the program’s benefits. The study concludes that while PMMY has enabled significant progress in improving women’s socioeconomic mobility in Tamil Nadu, further policy enhancements are necessary to optimize its impact. Addressing these gaps could ensure PMMY’s role in promoting gender equity and economic growth by more effectively supporting women entrepreneurs in the state.
