India’s healthcare system, though advancing, grapples with persistent challenges, fostering an uneven and inequitable distribution of healthcare services among its citizens. This paper reviews the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, underscoring its potential to revolutionize the system. AI has the capability of constructing localized and remote clinical decision support systems (DSSs) tailored to the unique needs of rural areas. Language translation and simplification for medical diagnosis enhance accessibility, ensuring that vital medical information reaches diverse linguistic communities. Furthermore, AI facilitates easy access to medical-related information, contributing to a more informed and empowered healthcare consumer base. AI can also enable effective remote patient monitoring and care, reducing hospital congestion and creating a more affordable system accessible to all. This review suggests that AI can be a valuable tool in building a just and equitable healthcare system for all Indians.
