Assessing the Learning and Innovation Skills, and Career Readiness of SEDGs in Tamil Nadu HEIs
Abstract

This study explores proficiency in learning and innovation skills, viz., creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, among students belonging to socioeconomically disadvantaged groups (SEDGs) in higher education institutions across Tamil Nadu. Using a crosssectional descriptive design, data have been collected from 1,232 SEDG students from five districts in Tamil Nadu. The results of the survey signify a low-to-moderate proficiency in learning and innovation skills among SEDGs. A notable skill-gap could also be observed between SEDGs’ skill levels and what is expected of the modern workforce. Further, the lack of integration of these skills into the curriculum is highlighted by their minimal emphasis in placement training programs. Consequently, the study affirms the necessity for integrating learning and innovation skills in the curricula to promote the career readiness and employability of socioeconomically disadvantaged students.
