Gamification in Safety Training: Balancing Engagement and Burnout Risks
Abstract

Games based on gamification have become increasingly popular and effective in improving the training of occupational safety in various industries. Gamified interventions enhance worker engagement, knowledge retention, and safetyrelated behaviors due to the compatibility of games with other game-based elements, including rewards, challenges, and immersion, as well as technologies such as virtual reality (VR). This systematic review synthesizes existing evidence on the design, implementation, and effects of gamification as part of safety training, with a particular focus on its psychological consequences, including enhanced resilience and a decrease in burnout. Another area where the review highlights barriers to implementation is cognitive overload, as well as the varying contexts across workers’ demographics and industries. The most prominent gaps identified are: long-term studies are needed; gamification approaches must be tailored on a case-by-case basis; and the scope of gamification itself must expand beyond serving established manufacturers to venture into other areas of popularized production, such as agriculture and small-scale manufacturing, which have yielded minimal study results so far. These gaps will allow organizations to optimize gamification and create healthier, more enjoyable, and efficient work environments.
