Traits of an Innovative Mindset: Perspectives of HEI Educators
Abstract

Innovation at some level is a cognitive process and as such it is the mindset that is the starting point for innovation. Educators in higher education institutions (HEIs) have a huge role to play in inculcating an innovative mindset in their students, the future entrepreneurs. The study examines as to what educators teaching in HEIs of India need to know about the innovative mindset in students and also the factors that may be used to identify the innovative mindset of students. As part of the study, 66 educators of HEIs in India were surveyed through a structured questionnaire. The respondents were teacher-participants in three Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) organized by three premier institutions of India. A maximum number of respondents associated ‘innovation’ with the word ‘new’. The most important characteristic of an innovative student was found to be ‘motivation’. Introduction

The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, are driving government policies across the globe since they came into force on January 1, 2016 (United Nations, 2018). Goal 9 talks about building resilient infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation. One of the targets of goal 9 is to encourage innovation along with substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people, particularly in developing countries (United Nations, 2023).
