Role of Stakeholder Engagement in Corporate Governance: A Bibliometric Perspective
Abstract

The study presents a bibliometric analysis of stakeholder engagement in corporate governance, based on Scopus-indexed literature from 2004 to 2025. The analysis shows a consistent rise in research output, with an annual growth rate of nearly 13%, confirming stakeholder engagement as an emerging core theme in corporate governance studies. Keyword and thematic analyses show strong links among stakeholder engagement, sustainability, corporate strategy, and risk management. The analysis also identifies emerging areas such as environmental, social and governance frameworks, integrated reporting, and artificial intelligence. The study contributes to the literature by mapping the importance of stakeholder engagement with corporate governance. The study confirms that stakeholder engagement strengthens governance by promoting ethical practice and sustainable value creation. It also offers a consolidated understanding of the field for decision-making, pointing to promising directions for future research identified through thematic analysis.

Introduction

Corporate governance represents the system of rules, structures, and processes through which corporations are directed, managed, and held accountable (Kroll & Edinger-Schons, 2024). It defines the rights and responsibilities of key stakeholders, including the board of directors, management, shareholders, employees, regulators, and society (Marie L’Huillier, 2014).
