Analysis and Design of an RCC Underpass Across a State Highway
Abstract

The paper presents a detailed analysis and design of a single-cell RCC box culvert functioning as a pedestrian underpass, across SH 20 in Belagavi city, Karnataka. It is designed to withstand IRC Class AA vehicular loading. The design methodology strictly adheres to Indian Standard and IRC codal provisions, including IRC: 6; IRC: 112; IS 456: 2000; and SP: 16. A comprehensive evaluation of loads such as dead load, live load, pedestrian load, vehicular load, earth pressure under dry and submerged conditions, surcharge, and base pressure is carried out. Critical load combinations are analyzed using the limit state method to determine governing bending moments, shear forces, and thrusts in the top slab, bottom slab, and side walls. Structural analysis is performed using the moment distribution method and validated with STAAD.Pro software. The results confirm that RCC box culvert pedestrian underpasses are safe, economical, and practical solutions for modern urban infrastructure development.

Introduction

A box culvert is a reinforced concrete structure with a rectangular or square crosssection used for the passage of water, pedestrians, or vehicles beneath embankments, highways, and railway lines.
