The paper carries out ploughing experiments on aluminum as parent material, and normal indenting forces were measured using dynamometer. The experimental results of normal force showed better match with nonlinear slip line field (SLF) theory than a linear one. Previously, it was considered that the lip (free surface) in case of indentation is linear. But experiments suggested that the lip profiles are not always linear, but rather curvilinear, and lip profile depends on several factors such as wedge angle and friction parameter. Ploughing experiments were conducted and forces were measured. The experimental values were compared with the theoretical values, and it was observed that the theoretical value of force for parabolic lip had better match than the linear lip.
Slip lines are generally orthogonal network of curvilinear lines (generally called ? and ?-lines). In any ideal plastic flow field, the slip lines are drawn through Hencky’s equation.
