The study examines the trends and patterns of human capital development among selected companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Using secondary data drawn from annual reports and the CMIE Prowess database, the study covers 96 companies from the BSE 100 index over the period 2014–15 to 2023–24. Trend analysis, Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), descriptive statistics, and coefficient of variation are employed to assess workforce growth and stability of human capital investment and development practices. A Human Capital Composite Index (HCCI) is constructed to provide a consolidated measure across firms and industries. The findings reveal moderate workforce growth with notable inter-industry variations, relatively stable human capital investment, and inconsistency in training and development practices. The study concludes that a more strategic and consistent approach to human capital development is imperative for enhancing organizational competitiveness.
In today’s knowledge-driven economy, human capital has become a critical organizational resource that contributes to long-term competitiveness and sustainable value creation. Human capital encompasses employees’ knowledge, skills, experience, and competencies, which can be continuously enhanced through education, training, and workplace learning.
