A Conceptual Framework for Improving the Efficacy of e-Governance in Rural Areas: An Indian Perspective

-- Puneet Kumar, Dharminder Kumar and A K Sharma

Two-thirds of the Indian population live in villages and in order to achieve the supposed objectives of e-governance, they need to be given more attention. The rural areas of the country are plagued by problems like connectivity, communication, technical illiteracy, etc., in comparison with the urban areas. Therefore, a single policy for rural as well as urban masses cannot be viable, and hence the existing service delivery mechanism needs to be reengineered. In this paper, we have devised a new framework for improving the efficacy of e-governance in rural areas by enhanced capacity building mechanism, new modus operandi for interest generation towards IT, and inculcation of mobile and cloud technologies. Further, the proposed model also reduces the cost of infrastructure as well as delivered services, and enhances the scalability.

The Challenges Posed by Information Technology to Secretaries: A Study with Reference to Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, Nigeria

--Johnson Adegbenga Ajiboye, Mary Adebola Ajiboye
and Juliet Omozokpia

This study was conducted to identify the challenges of information technologies on secretaries in the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, Nigeria. The study was embarked upon to emphasize the importance or significance of secretaries as they face the challenges of the information technology in an ICT era. The research was carried out using 50 secretaries. The instrument used in the collection of data was a questionnaire and the data collected was analyzed using the SPSS software. From the analysis of data collected, it was found and concluded that among other things most secretaries lack necessary skills required for ICT in the modern office and most of them with just typing and shorthand skills are on the verge of losing their jobs. Although, it was discovered and concluded that secretaries will not be replaced by computers and that the ones with ICT skills are in high demand and with ample career opportunities in the modern office. It was then recommended that organizations should train and retrain their secretaries to be ICT-compliant and that the curriculum of secretarial study programs should be reviewed and widened to include ICT courses so as to give potential secretaries an ICT background.

Big Data Analytics: Applications and Benefits

--K V N Rajesh

Nowadays, companies are concentrating on more data to take informed decisions. Huge amount of investment is made in storing and processing large amounts of data to make better decisions. The term ‘Big Data’ is derived from the fact that the datasets are so large that typical database systems are not able to store and analyze the datasets (Manyika et al., 2011). The processing of big data is done by using MapReduce. However, big data entails a huge commitment of hardware and processing resources, making adoption costs of big data technology prohibitive to small and medium-sized businesses. Cloud computing offers hardware and processing resources for big data implementation. This paper describes benefits and applications of big data in various industry verticals, popular big data tools available in the market and their capabilities. Some of the areas like banking, travel and healthcare where big data finds application have been discussed.

Seclayer: A Plugin to Prevent Phishing Attacks

--Ayush Ghosh

Today’s phishing attacks are the combination of social engineering and technical exploits designed to convince a victim to provide personal information. The attacks are designed in a way to fool even a modern technical user who has a complete understanding of the Internet and phishing. The attacker even send spoofed message to complement the spoofed phishing mail they have sent to make the e-mail even convincing. We have done everything from SSL to installing toolbar and Add-on to counter them, but we still could not overpower the attackers. Human being, the weakest chain in all of this, falls as a prey in the attacker’s hand. To mitigate this widespread problem of phishing on the Internet, almost all modern-day browsers provide security indicators. A lot have been done to identify it, but still it remains an imminent threat on the Internet. In this paper, I have introduced a new project ‘SECLAYER’ to stop phishing attacks. This Add-on can detect malicious website with 100% success, if the attacker does not have physical access to the system. This Add-on interacts with its hosted companion to maintain a list of websites to prevent phishing on.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs): The Changing Face of Banking in India

Bank Management
Information and communication technology has changed the way in which banks provide services to its customers. These days the customers are able to perform their routine banking transactions without even entering the bank premises. ATM is one such development in recent years, which provides remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the development of this self-service banking in India based on the secondary data.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing a very important role in the progress and advancement in almost all walks of life. The deregulated environment has provided an opportunity to restructure the means and methods of delivery of services in many areas, including the banking sector. The ICT has been a focused issue in the past two decades in Indian banking. In fact, ICTs are enabling the banks to change the way in which they are functioning. Improved customer service has become very important for the very survival and growth of banking sector in the reforms era. The technological advancements, deregulations, and intense competition due to the entry of private sector and foreign banks have altered the face of banking from one of mere intermediation to one of provider of quick, efficient and customer-friendly services. With the introduction and adoption of ICT in the banking sector, the customers are fast moving away from the traditional branch banking system to the convenient and comfort of virtual banking. The most important virtual banking services are phone banking, mobile banking, Internet banking and ATM banking. These electronic channels have enhanced the delivery of banking services accurately and efficiently to the customers. The ATMs are an important part of a bank’s alternative channel to reach the customers, to showcase products and services and to create brand awareness. This is reflected in the increase in the number of ATMs all over the world. ATM is one of the most widely used remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the growth of ATMs of different bank groups in India.
International Scenario

If ATMs are largely available over geographically dispersed areas, the benefit from using an ATM will increase as customers will be able to access their bank accounts from any geographic location. This would imply that the value of an ATM network increases with the number of available ATM locations, and the value of a bank network to a customer will be determined in part by the final network size of the banking system. The statistical information on the growth of branches and ATM network in select countries.

Indian Scenario

The financial services industry in India has witnessed a phenomenal growth, diversification and specialization since the initiation of financial sector reforms in 1991. Greater customer orientation is the only way to retain customer loyalty and withstand competition in the liberalized world. In a market-driven strategy of development, customer preference is of paramount importance in any economy. Gone are the days when customers used to come to the doorsteps of banks. Now the banks are required to chase the customers; only those banks which are customercentric and extremely focused on the needs of their clients can succeed in their business today.
